Insight Into the Resilient American Mother

In America today, more than half of all mothers are living paycheck to paycheck. Nearly two thirds of working moms say that the American business culture makes it “nearly impossible” to juggle work and family life. Mothers are torn on the role of social media and technology and are taking on a lion’s share of housekeeping and parenting responsibilities. Overall two thirds of mothers believe that their children are less safe than they were as children and most say it is harder to be a mother today than it was in their parent’s generation. In fact, a majority (53%) say America is becoming a worse place to raise children while only 15% believe it is getting better.

The groundbreaking poll from Shriver Media and Special Olympics International, supported by the Richard and Cecilia Attias Foundation, conducted online by Harris Poll in July 2015, reveals that the more than half of Americans who have personal contact with someone with intellectual disabilities are increasingly accepting and positive. It also exposes that lack of contact has left a legacy of misinformation, dated stereotypes, ignorance and fear in the other nearly half of Americans.

Insight into the 21st Century Man

The 21st Century Man is not who you think he is. More important than financial or professional achievement, Today’s Man defines the American Dream as having personal success with his family (60%). Today’s man defines strength as having character and integrity (46%) above physical and financial dominance. Today’s man is very comfortable with having a partner working outside the home (63%), and roughly half are very comfortable answering to a female boss (49%) and being outlearned by his partner or spouse (51%). Yet, less than half of men today feel “very comfortable” having a female President of the United States (45%). The 21st Century Man says he knows who he is not but admits he is still evolving to define who he is.
